Cat Facts

The PurrBalls growing list of cat facts:

50 - Ever wonder why cats seem to want to be alone or go away when they're dying? They don't have a concept of death but know they are being threatened by something (illness, injury). The predator is invisible but the cat is trying to hide from this threat.

49 - Cats have freckles too! They appear in the cat's mouth, on the ears or skin.

48 - Cats are more resistant to illness than many other animals. Given a well-balanced diet, proper grooming, love and attention, yearly vet visits and kept indoors - your cat should lead a long and happy life.

47 - People with allergies are less affected by light-coloured cats. Dark fur produces more allergens.

46 - A fit cat is lean with ribs easily felt beneath the fur. If your cat's head is overly plump and its abdomen protrudes beneath its rib cage, it's probably overweight.

45 - The cat's long tongue converts to a spoon when they drink. It flicks a little water to the back of its mouth and doesn't swallow after each lap, only after the fourth or fifth when there's enough water to swallow.

44 - The great French novelist and dramatist (1802-1885) Victor Hugo's favourite cat was an Angora named Gavroche. He found cats magnificient and said "God has made the cat to give man the pleasure of caressing the tiger."

43 - Your cat will bury its head under your arm when worried or afraid (i.e. at the vet's) to relax itself. You can also relax your cat by gently stroking the side of its mouth/cheek!

42 - Prior to the 18th century, "tomcat" (a male cat) was named a "ramkat" or sometimes refered to as a "boarcat".

41 - Tests have revealed that of every hundred cats, about 40 are left-pawed, 20 are right-pawed and 40 are ambidextrous. Big contrast with humans where only 10 are left-handed for every 90 of us who are right-handed.
