Cat Facts

The PurrBalls growing list of cat facts:

40 - Plant some grass indoors for your cat in pots or trays! They enjoy munching on grass and extracting the juices that contain folic acid. Indoor cats are often anaemic because they lack this vitamin which plays a vital role in the production of haemoglobin.

39 - "I taut I taw a puddy tat" The cat Sylvester first met the canary Tweety Pie in 1947. "Sufferin' Succotash!"

38 - The cat's need to groom itself immediately after eating is completely instinctual - it is erasing food odours that may attract predators. They clean their fur and renew their signature scent!

37 - How to pick up a cat properly:
Put your hand under the cat's front legs, your other hand under its hind quarters.
Keep the hand firmly under its hind quarters, supporting its full weight.
Hold the cat upright and put your hand around its upper chest for support.

36 - Cats meow a lot louder when they communicate with other cats than when they do so with humans.

35 - Cats should always be transported to the vet's etc. in pet carriers. It's safer for them and for you. Leave the cat carrier in the basement or somewhere out of the way, opened with toys in them - this way your cat will get acclimated to it. Remember to block the door open so that it doesn't shut close on them!

34 - We have many diseases common with cats. (Although treatment and medications are very different -- please see the Poisonous Products to Cats page.) Over millions of years of evolution members of the cat family, Felidae, have stayed very close to humans genetically speaking. Closer than the dog and all other mammals with the exception of apes and monkeys.

33 - About 84% of pet owners refer to themselves and to their pets as their mom or dad!

32 - Cats have five toes on their front paws and four toes on their back paws. Cats with six toes are polydactyl, a result of inbreeding.

31 - A fearful or intimidated cat will become more affectionate given patience, solitude when required and attention when needed. Jokes and cats don't mix well - throwing a pillow at a cat or startling one does not strenghten the bond!
